Tranquillitas - Wineyard retreat

Inspired by the cloister of the nearby Basilica di San Francesco, this is a place to rest and reconnect with the nature of the Umbrian countryside, whilst experiencing locally sourced food and wine.

‘Covered patios interlace with the guest houses, elegantly framing panoramic views of the surrounding countryside.’

The site layout is organized around a central courtyard surrounded by arched porches, creating an intimate and versatile space that imparts a feeling of security and seclusion, while serving as an ideal backdrop for various events and social interactions. The diagonal break along the north-south axis invites visitors to enter the courtyard, creating a visual continuity towards the city of Assisi and allowing the separation between the guest houses and the main building. Covered patios interlace with the guest houses, elegantly framing panoramic views of the surrounding countryside. The rhythmic arrangement of both the columns and arched openings draws inspiration from the vineyard patterns that encircle the property. The five guest homes are developed along the east corner of the plot. The porched frontage provides a protective layer from the public space of the central courtyard. The large openings and the private gardens offer both a visual and physical connection with the picturesque landscape. Inside, the space is at the same time sophisticated, cosy and functional, thanks to the use of modular and adaptable solutions.

The main building is the public face of the project. Its arched openings are designed to make it a prominent landmark that warmly welcomes visitors while harmonizing with the natural surroundings. The double-height vaulted space is multifunctional, accommodating the wine tasting and dining area, as well as giving the possibility to host events and exhibitions. The vaults are a direct reference to the space of the cellars where wine is traditionally produced. A north-western porch provides a sheltered area that doubles as a dining space during the summer months and houses the swimming pool area. The inner courtyard, a semi-public domain, facilitates the hosting of larger events and gatherings, while also linking various functions. Deliberately positioned recessed floor lights enhance the circulation paths, guiding visitors gracefully through the space. Sustainability is a fundamental pillar of the project. On top of ensuring the highest standard for the insulation of the building envelope, the materials and finishes chosen are all locally sourced to minimise the carbon footprint of the project.
